About the Renal CCRE

The Centre for Clinical Research Excellence (CCRE) in Renal Medicine was established in 2003 as one of the nine NHMRC Centres for Clinical Research Excellence in Australia and is the only one with a renal focus.

The administrative base is within the Westmead Research Campus in Sydney's western suburbs. This "virtual" research centre incorporates the Centre for Kidney Research (CKR) at The Children's Hospital at Westmead and the Department of Renal Medicine (DRM) at Westmead Hospital. Collaborating Research Units include the Department of Renal Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) in Camperdown, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and the Nephrology Department at Monash University.

The Centre has three themes:

  • research
  • training
  • and translation of research into practice
It aims to answer important research questions such as:

  • Does screening for early kidney disease prevent kidney failure?
  • Does kidney disease in Aboriginal people begin in early childhood?
  • What causes transplanted kidneys to fail?

With the worldwide editorial base of the Cochrane Renal Group, the editorial base of CARI, the National Guidelines on Renal Disease and close links with the Master of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) program at the University of Sydney, this Centre also provides mechanisms for clinical research training and the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
